Families and schools need visible norms
Children do not learn restraint from abstract lectures. They learn it from repeated rituals,
clear boundaries, and adults who are willing to model effort in front of them.

A household rule, a classroom routine, or a workplace expectation repeated daily will do more
than one dramatic conversation about the future of humanity.
Rule 1: Do the first pass with your own brain
What to do: Start with notes, bullets, sketches, or a rough verbal explanation before opening AI.
Why it matters: The first pass exposes what you know, what you do not know, and where your voice naturally begins.
Example: Before asking for an essay outline, write five ugly bullets from memory. They do not need to be good. They need to be yours.
Rule 2: Use AI after effort, not before it
What to do: Set a minimum struggle window before you ask for help.
Why it matters: Friction is not failure. It is where pattern recognition and problem framing begin.
Example: A teen gets 15 minutes to attempt the math explanation or reading response before any AI prompt is allowed.
Rule 3: Pass every answer through the explain-it-back test
What to do: If AI gives you an answer, restate it in your own words without looking.
Why it matters: Explanation is the fastest way to expose fake understanding.
Example: If a tool summarizes a policy memo, explain the policy aloud to a colleague in plain language before you forward anything.
Rule 4: Create daily No AI time
What to do: Protect a block of time each day where reading, writing, or planning happens with no generative assistance.
Why it matters: If you never practice unassisted thinking, you should not be surprised when it gets harder.
Example: Make the first 20 minutes of homework, journaling, sermon prep, or meeting prep AI-free every day.
Rule 5: Build a family knowledge system
What to do: Keep a shared notebook, whiteboard, or digital document where your household stores explanations, quotes, questions, and lessons in its own words.
Why it matters: A family that documents what it learns is less likely to outsource memory, meaning, and judgment by default.
Example: After a news story, each family member adds one fact, one question, and one opinion to the same page before anyone asks a machine to summarize it.
Rule 6: Teach skepticism with three simple questions
What to do: Teach kids and teens to ask: How does it know? What is missing? Who benefits if I believe this?
Why it matters: Skepticism becomes teachable when it is repeatable.
Example: When an AI tool gives a history answer or study summary, have the student run the three questions before using any of it.
Rule 7: Use AI for alternatives, not verdicts
What to do: Ask the tool for counterarguments, missing angles, or better questions after you already have a position.
Why it matters: This keeps agency with the human while still using the machine as a useful challenger.
Example: Write your proposal first, then ask AI: What did I miss? Where is the argument weak? What objections would a critic raise?
The goal is not purity. The goal is to protect enough original effort that assistance does not become identity.
